Black is always a good color to use in fashion and art!

It can be mysterious and dramatic, sophisticated and powerful.  In Feng Shui, black is a color of the water element, and it is considered to be feminine energy. Black can be a restful emptiness like a deep pool of water drawing your thoughts inward.

In art it is a good color to ground and support bright, vibrant colors. I mat almost all of my prints in black before framing them because my art uses very vibrant and pure colors. Black makes the art stand out. It showcases them like that little black dress emphases the person wearing it instead of the clothing itself.

In art, black is the negative space that balances the positive colors and shapes. It has weight and substance. Black absorbs the surrounding energy and allows the art’s colors to shine. It is the Yin energy in the Yin-Yang combination.

A touch of black, be it in the art or in the framing, will add sophistication and a contemporary edge.
